The film follows immortal thousand-year-old Doctor Parnassus (Plummer), the leader of a traveling theater troupe, who takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations. He is able to do this through a deal with the Devil (Waits). Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Verne Troyer, and Heath Ledger star in the film. Due to Ledger's death one-third of the way through filming, his role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger's character Tony as he travels through a dream world.
